1786 Tax Summons to Town of Derby Signed By Connecticut Treasurer John Lawrence
This large (9 1/2 x 15 1/2") tax writ is signed by Connecticut Treasurer John Lawrence and requests the Sheriff of New Haven County to collect fifteen shillings and six pence from the Town of Derby selectmen for taxes owing from that town. The back of the writ shows that the sheriff was initially unsuccessful, but the front below Lawrence's signature seems to indicate a settlement of the matter by various payment methods. This historic document was executed before the United States Constitution and money was calculated using the English system of shillings, pounds and pence instead of dollars. The document is in very good condition and would be a nice addition for a collector of early Americana, Connecticut or financial memorabilia.
