President Harry S. Truman Harry S.Truman served as President of the United States from 1945 upon the death of Franklin D. Roosevelt through 1953 with the inauguration of Dwight Eisenhower. He successfully ended World War II with victories over Germany and Japan, the latter after the momentous decision to drop the first atomic bomb, and started the world wide fight against Communism, most notably through the Marshall Plan in Europe and the Korean War in Asia. He confounded all prognosticators when against all odds he won election in 1948 despite low poll ratings and lukewarm support from his own party. He is one of the favorite American presidents for many people because of his honesty, courage and plain speaking style.
