1850s Hand Colored Stone Lithographs of Birds of the West Alpomado Falcon
This beautiful bird of prey says on the top border "U.S.P.R.R. Exp. & Surveys --- 32nd Parallel" and "Birds --- Plate I." Some Alpomado Falcons are on the endangered species list in the United States. A full page excerpt from the "Reports of Explorations and Surveys to Ascertain the Most Practicable and Economical Route for a Railroad from the Mississippi River to the Pacific Ocean" and its "Report Upon Birds Collected On The Survey" by Dr. A. L Heermann, which is attached to the back of the matted print, says that this specimen was captured on the plains of New Mexico in 1858. Dr. Heerman notes in his report that,
