Punch Caricaturist and Book Illustrator

This 1892 Sir Leslie Ward "Spy" Vanity Fair caricature is of Punch cartoonist and illustrator Edward Linley Sambourne shown in a riding outfit with boots, spurs, riding crop and smoking a cigar. After this print was published Sambourne succeeded Sir John Tenniel as the chief cartoonist at Punch. (See some of Tenniel's caricatures of Abraham Lincoln here).

The contemporary biography published with the print, a copy of which comes with the print, by Jehu Junior  speaks of the early conflict between an engineering career and drawing:

He was then devoting such time as he could spare from the more serious business of caricaturing other people to the art of engineering...when a good angel took one of his untaught sketches into the hands of Mark Lemon, who thereupon put a presentment of John Bright tilting at a quintain into Punch. Since then his countless original, humourous, and precisely detailed drawings for that paper have made his pencil well known to all the world.

Among the books he illustrated were "The Water Babies" by Charles Kingsley and "Hans Andersen's Fairy tales."

This print comes already matted to a standard 16 x 20" frame size so it will be easy and inexpensive to frame and is enclosed in a protective plastic sleeve (which produces a ripple effect in the picture below).
