"The Nooning"

This is another one of Winslow Homer's genre classics of three boys relaxing with their dog in the backyard on a beautiful summer's day. Philip Beam in his book on Homer's periodical engravings noted that

"Over the years Homer often painted the same subjects in watercolor and oil that he depicted in his engravings. When the results were especially satisfactory he based engravings directly upon them. Some of his best known pictures in both media...The Noon Recess, The Nooning, Gathering Berries, and "Snap-the-Whip" illustrate this reciprocal relationship."

The August 1873 engraving is in wonderful condition with full borders, shown below in a scan that distorted the image upon reduction in size.
